At other times, people would approach us with bits and pieces of information that they remembered from long ago favourites in hopes that we could at least help them come up with an author or title to help in their search, which we often times did, with the book in hand.

And when we couldn't come up with anything on our own, we would pick the brains of other customers in conversation, or turn to the internet for help for them. For us, quality and selection of stock go hand-in-hand with customer service. One isn't much good without the other.

Uses applications in science and engineering to demonstrate the concepts learned. The text has little biographies of people that did mathematical things strewn throughout and multiple worked examples.

Calculus and Analytic Geometry, Ninth Edition

The book uses lots of computer-generated graphics and other things. I would say it is an excellent reference as well since it has tables of derivatives and integrals in the book along with answers to odd-numbered exercises. This particular text covers topics ranging from beginning limits to vector c Uses applications in science and engineering to demonstrate the concepts learned. This particular text covers topics ranging from beginning limits to vector calculus. So it obviously builds on what was learned.

Just in case you never had it, it also covers some Precalculus in the very beginning of the book. The text also contains little projects that people can do to demonstrate the ideas taught.

I got this book for College so I can't remember the last time I cracked it open. In any case, I guess it is good that I didn't get rid of it.

The only real problem is that the book seems to be a bit 'busy' if you will forgive the expression. With all of the little images and biographies and pictures it sometimes gets distracting.

But it doesn't cover as much as Stewarts book.

I really think your best bet would be to look at other freshman calc books and see if they clear things up for you Anton, Larson, and Thomas are three very popular examples, and you might find that one or more of them explains things in a way that you find more understandable.

But if you absolutely don't want a textbook, then all you can do is try books like "Calculus for Dummies," or "Calculus Demystified," or stuff like that. I've never read them, so I don't know how good they are. With all due respect to other posters, including those who always recommend Spivak or Apostol, I strongly doubt that analysis-based texts are what you want, if you were flirting with a D your first time around. You might also consider that the problem may not be with calculus, but with its prereqs.

If you think you may be a little shaky in algebra or trig or graphing functions, you might want to get a PREcalculus text and work through it carefully. Unfortunately, the precalc text I usually recommend is also by Stewart.

You might try Swokowski's, though. Last edited: Aug 26, Read the Amazon reviews of Calculus by Gilbert Strang. If you like the book reviews, you can google his website - Wellesley-Cambridge Press and order the text and the solutions manual and the study guide if you're still interested.

If he still has the first edition on hand you'll probably get a real good deal on it. Actually you can download a slightly older but perfectly good edition of Strang's book, study guide, and solutions manual for free from the OCW site: Which parts did you find the most confusing?Applications of Max and Min 6.

Connect with: But the main disadvantage of an edition this old compared to a more modern text is that it makes no mention of the graphing calculators or symbolic math programs that all college students have access to.
